FIRE DEPARTMENT SOUTH

The professional fire brigade in Aachen will get a new building at the crossing Robert-Schumann-Straße / Siegelallee with the new Fire Department South. The plot is the transition point of a forest tothe city. The goal of the design is to create a compact functional body in order to enable fast functional processes and to preserve the tree population. Two massive blocks, reduced in their basic form, build a bold sculpture that creates a dialogue between city and forest. The appearance is formed by a tower and a horizontal structure, which seems to be floating on a vehicle hall of glass. The hall of glass expands the clearing with views of the city as well as interesting insights into the activities of the firefighters. The brick wall, which completely covers the two massive cuboids, hides the private functions of the fire department from the public glade. The compact floor area is achieved by a layering of functions.

OPERATION SEQUENCE

for each fire brigade, from bottom to top, the parking spaces, the emergency vehicles, the changing rooms and the sleeping quarters are located directly above each other. This makes an extremely fast (independent of other fire brigades) almost exclusively vertical operational sequence via sliding poles possible (red line - move out). A conceptionally consistent black-and-white separation via separate routes almost completely excludes contamination in the building (green line - move in).

GRID

Due to the layering of the functions, a grid had to be found which meets all requirements: parking spaces, primary grid, interior grid, materials. This grid is consistently incorporated into the facade and room layout. The masonry is designed as a pierced facade. The pattern plays with the strictness of the grid and burns it or extinguishes it depending on the time of the day.
